Caesarstone Guide for Milan 2016

Prior to the most important design week in the world, Caesarstone^® has chosen the top 10 must-see sites during Milan Design Week.

The Milan Design Week, which will take place from the 12th to the 17th of April, is the highlight event of the design world. Designers, architects, and design lovers from around the world will flock to the event. With over 400 thousand visitors, hundreds of events, displays, palaces, hangars and exhibition halls, the city of Milan will wear festive attire and entire neighborhoods will compete for attention. With this in mind, this year once again, we have collected the top 10 sites that should not be missed.

This will be the fourth year running that Caesarstone^® exhibits in Milan. This year, Caesarstone^® will present ‘The Restaurant’ – a huge and inspiring exhibit designed by British designer Tom Dixon. The exhibit will be shown inside an old 18th century monastery, used today as the Milano Children’s Museum (MUBA). Dixon has designed four kitchen models, each drawing inspiration from the four elements – water (ice), fire, earth and air. Each of the kitchens is different in style, color, furnishings, and complementary accessories. Even the food, prepared and served in each one, will be diverse in accordance to the kitchen’s element. The Italian food design studio, Arabeschi di Latte, will be responsible for the culinary concepts. The result will integrate both design and culinary art, offering a multi-sensory experience.

Every year, the international design magazine Wallpaper* includes Caesarstone’s exhibit in its prestigious list of mandatory sites at Milan Design Week. This year, the magazine has chosen to hold its famous annual party together with Caesarstone^® at ‘The Restaurant’. For those of you intending to visit Milan’s Design Week we have rounded up nine additional recommendations for events, shows, exhibitions and launches that you do not want to miss:

1) Caesarstone^® and Tom Dixon present ‘The Restaurant’, A conceptual exhibit located at the heart of an ancient monastery, promising to be an unforgettable design and culinary experience.

2) The official exhibition at the Milan- Design Week is the Salone del Mobile, celebrating with over 1300 exhibitors from 160 countries. This year, for the first time, a special section, xLux, will be dedicated to luxury brands from the world of fashion, cars and tourism – brands such as Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Ritz and Lamborghini. The biannual exhibition for kitchen and bathroom designs by Eurocucina, will focus on “smart home” appliances showcasing connectivity and personalization.

3) The main exhibit “Design after Design” at the Triennale Design Museum, is dedicated to changes in the culture of life, work and housing, and to the new design branches that have grown in the era of globalization and digitalization. The exhibit “Rooms. Novel living concepts” the visitors will walk between imaginary rooms created by leading designers such as Fabio Novembre, Alessandro Mendini, Marco Romanelli and others.

4) The Holon Institute of Technology’s, Design Faculty will present two exhibitions. The first, “Yes &” will be presented at the Triennale. About 20 teachers, students and graduates of the Faculty will present a snapshot of contemporary Israeli design. In the second part, “Poetry”, design students will present a new interpretation and a unique design for an everyday product.

5) Once again this year, many of the youngest and most intriguing designers, as well as design schools from around the world, including Switzerland, Japan, France and India, will exhibit in the Ventura Lambrate quarter. A special stage will be devoted to national exhibitions: Scandinavian Norway on the one hand, and Asian Thailand, on the other, will present exhibits incorporating designers and the design industry with a touch of their traditional crafts.

6) Dutch design firm Moooi, continues its traditional yet spectacular display in a space of 1,200 square meters divided up by huge prints of incredible photographs. This year features fine art photographer Rebecca Bathory’s photos of surreal rooms and dream landscapes, with their beauty arising from ruins and invasion of nature into the human environment.

7) “Ron Arad is not about taking things for granted,” declares Patrizia Moroso, head of the company devoting a special exhibition to honor the many years of collaboration with the international Israeli designer. The exhibition is presented in the Moroso showroom in the city center, while the company reveals its new collections in the main expo area.

8) One hundred and twenty five Dutch designers will be presenting in “Mastery”, a showcase of Dutch visual cultural heritage, combining design, art, craft and industry. The Palazzo Francesco Turati, a 19th century building, provides a dramatic backdrop. It was only opened to the public after extensive renovations, which restored its radiance.

9) Studio Nendo which collaborated with Caesarstone^® in the “Stone Garden” project in Milan 2013, will now present “50 chairs from Venus”, an exhibit inspired by Japanese comic art. Nendo takes the simplistic shape of the chair and combines it with abstract lines and grids used in graphics for manga-style comic books, like speech bubbles or lines that depict action or movement.

10) Rossanna Orlandi’s Garden, one of the world’s leading contemporary design galleries, transforms during Milan Design Week into a wonderland, which not only includes the shop and exhibit rooms, but also showcases designs by outstanding and surprising designers, including Maarten Baas, Piet Hein Eek, BCXSY and Nacho Carbonell.

11) ‘Spectra by Kukka As part of Frame’s “What’s the Matter? Design for a Phygital World” exhibition in Milan, Kukka will be showcasing two complete pieces that are part of the ‘Spectra’ project: ABCD table and O table. These are occasional, side tables composed of two pieces and made from Caesarstone^® premium quartz surface and dichroic glass made by Prinz Optics.
